Patrick Buick GMC is proud to join in the fight against hunger by participating in the 2012 Drive Away Hunger event with FeedMore and the Central Virginia Food Bank.
From now through October 31, we encourage you to bring your nonperishable food donations to Patrick Buick GMC in Ashland for delivery to the food bank as part of the Greater Richmond New Car Dealers Association Drive Away Hunger month. This is the third year for the food and fund drive, and in 2011 the GRNCDA collected enough food and monetary contributions to provide 208,921 meals for hungry children, families, and the elderly of central Virginia.
While past donations have been generous, FeedMore anticipates drastically increasing needs, including a 20% rise in the number of meals provided to children. Your donations are needed and appreciated. Items most in need include canned fruits and vegetables, canned meats, canned tuna and salmon, hot and cold cereals, pasta and rice, pasta sauce, and peanut butter.
FeedMore is the organization made up of the Central Virginia Food Bank, Community Kitchen, and area Meals on Wheels chapter. The groups merged to use their combined resources and variety of programs to form a united front against hunger in Central Virginia, including 31 counties and five cities. Their distribution center provided food for over 11 million meals for hungry people last year. They also operate the Hunger Hotline (804-521-2500), which connects people in need of food with local food pantries, as well as Meals on Wheels, which delivers food to elderly and others with difficulty leaving their homes or preparing their own meals.
Other services included with these programs include BackPacks, a food supply for a child for an entire weekend, when they can’t depend on school breakfast and lunch programs, and Kids Café, a program that provides children ages 5 to 17 with five meals a week after school or in the summer. A donation of just $50 can provide five weeks of BackPacks for one child, or one month of Kids Café meals for one child.
Also during the summer, the Community Kitchen Summer Feeding program feeds an average of 2,500 children breakfast and lunch each weekday. The Community Kitchen also works daily, year-round, to cook and package meals for over 1,800 Meals on Wheels clients, using quality ingredients and customizing meals for 17 different dietary restrictions. A donation of $50 provides 200 pounds of food for the distribution center or two full weeks of nutritious meals the homebound.
Please bring your donations to Patrick Buick GMC in Ashland, Virginia, and we will assure that they are delivered where they are most needed. To sweeten the deal and show our appreciation of your support for the cause, any donation of five items or more will receive a free combo meal from Chick-Fil-A (from our location only, redeemable at Virginia Center Commons Chick-Fil-A). We hope to see you soon!
